After we finished our second LP we had a lot of energy and not a great many songs; these four tracks didn't really have a home and had somewhat questionable origins. I had recorded a demo of A Century a few years earlier, when it was called 'A Gesture Made' and I had in mind a kind of mannered Smithsy/Suede b-side. The demo was nice but we struggled to re-record it, and my singing is horribly flat. Known To Run was a much better song but it was essentially an unintentional re-write of an earlier song, It's Alright (performed with a bit more confidence and a waily, Brett-y vocal from me). We added lots of synths to it and those keyboards are equally present on Nothing Else, which is a good groove in search of a song. Getting Away With It was a lovely instrumental by Pete which I created an unnecessary lyric for. It probably didn't need a vocal - or it needed a better one.

I'm glad we recorded these songs though! Nothing Else and Known To Run still sound kind of great to me, and I'm back in the room when I hear them.
